I think it's all generally seen as deriving from original 50s/60s terminology, defending the USSRs actions crushing the Hungarian revolution and then Prague Spring. But yes, the article cites the reference that Risotto Bias quoted while noting that these subreddits "fit Petterson’s description of contemporary tankies (Petterson 2020), where they declare their support for Actually Existing Socialist (AES) countries, while also identifying themselves as Marxist-Leninists."
