Heatwave takes out the power grid in Iraq.

"...Power has gone out across Iraq as scorching summer temperatures pushed electricity grid demand to unprecedented levels.... The electricity ministry said the grid suffered a "total outage" after two transmission lines were shut down "due to a record rise in temperatures, increased consumer demand, and increased electrical load in the provinces of Babylon and Karbala, which are experiencing an influx of millions of pilgrims" for a major Shiite Muslim commemoration."

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org yeah really gotta wonder about that section of the world in terms of long term survival as the climate warms

I was tracking ships in the Persian gulf a while back and saw that Bandar Abbas had a Heat index of like 156. I mean we’re talking at or way beyond the limits of everyday human capacity. at those kind of temperatures, particularly with the high humidity we lose our sweating mechanism for cooling. I have spent 8+ hours over 110 but I’m sitting in a chair in the shade, there is no humidity, there’s a hot wind blowing, and I’m drinking water by the gallons.
