In his first term, Trump spent a lot of time at the Trump International Hotel in the city, but with that hotel now closed, Trump usually stays in the White House. If he ever ventures out it is in an armored vehicle “the beast” with an escort.

Allen said that #DC leaders had “tons of questions” right now, including whether the current police chief, Pamela Smith, was in fact still the #police chief. “We literally don’t know the answer right now,” Allen said, adding that as of last night the district’s police command staff “did not have any indication that this is the step they were going to take.”

Several hundred people gathered downtown in front of Lafayette Square, blocks from the White House, to #protest #Trump’s #takeover of the #WashingtonDC #police force.
“We will not stand here & allow #authoritarianism in Washington, DC,” said Nee Nee Taylor, a co-founder of #FreeDC, which organized the rally & was formed to defend the District’s #HomeRule. “We are going to be here & we’re not backing down.”

Keya Chatterjee, another of the group’s founders, announced the news of #Trump’s plans to the crowd, telling them about his intention to take #control of the city’s #police force & deploy the #NationalGuard.
The crowd booed loudly.
Chatterjee then announced one immediate plan: For every single day #DC is “under occupation,” she asked every DC resident to step out on their porch & make noise every night, at 8PM ET.
“We will not be cowed in the face of this bully,” she said. “We will organize.”
In a statement, Brian Schwalb, the elected attorney general of the District of Columbia, called the administration’s actions to take control of the city “unprecedented, unnecessary and unlawful.” He added, “We are considering all of our options and will do what’s necessary to protect the rights and safety of District residents.”
