In Portuguese I usually say "se não desse trabalho não seria trabalho"... (If it weren't tough it wouldn't be [called] work.)

For a brief moment it occurred to me that the word trouble might come from the same root of trabalho, but no. Trouble comes from turbulus (turbulent, shaky, noisy), while trabalho comes from tripalium (a kind of whip).
