Thanks for the info. The saw with the etching only has a few spots of rust, so I think I'll just scrape and paint the rust remover on the spots and leave the rest alone.

If the "Disstonian Institute" web site is to be believed, the medallion on this saw identifies it as from the last line from the Disston family business, made in 1953 - 1955 before being sold to HK Porter.

The words "DISSTON" and "U.S.A." are embossed on the surface inside the rim. There is symbol in the center consisting of a keystone with a pan balance scale inside. The keystone is surrounded by a circle of tiny solid raised dots. The saw handle is wood, medium brown in color, with some "wheat" chip carving visible. The metal plate of the saw has a brushed steel or satin appearance with a few dark spots. Manufacturer's logo etched on the metal plate of an old handsaw. The etching is darker gray against the silver gray unetched plate. The plate has a brushed steel or satin texture. There are some darker spots on the metal. The logo is a keystone with a 2 pan balance scale in the middle. Text in the top part of the keystone reads "ESTABLISHED 1840". Below that is the company name "HENRY DISSTON & SONS" Between the pans of the balance scale is the saw model number: "D-23". At the bottom of the keystone is "PHILADELPHIA U S A".
