I know this bloke (haven't seen him for years now) who habitually refers to Americans as "merkins". Which just sounds like a humorous mispronunciation unless you know what the word "merkin" actually means. So I was a little bit horrified when he did this, and I said, "Do you know what that word means?"
"Oh, yes!" he replied cheerfully.
Let us then sincerely hope that any Americans in his ambit don't.
