I just do not understand why you would choose to make a TV series supposedly based on (and named the same as) a beloved set of books and then completely rewrite the plot, characters, and storyline into something almost unrecognizably different.

@derek@www.glidden.life Why would there be more money butchering something? Peter Jackson didn't and LOTR was a massive success.

@petergleick@fediscience.org @derek@www.glidden.life Is it something that can transfer easily to screen? Not everything is. To be honest I read the books so long ago I don't remember very much and they may not have aged so well

@ariaflame@masto.ai @petergleick@fediscience.org They haven't aged well, but they could still be adapted to screen albeit with a lot fewer special effects and things blowing up than the series has. Plus, I can imagine a three-season series working out quite well based on the three original books, but that doesn't pay out like a five- or six- or more-season series. So why not butcher it for more sponsors. I don't believe in Amazon for integrity to the original source, but I sure believe in them to milk it for profit.

I reread them a couple of years back and they
really haven’t aged well, but updating them wouldn’t require a complete rewrite (remembering that women exist before book 2 would be a good start). I watched the first couple of episodes of the adaptation and gave up. The thing that made the Foundation series was that the protagonists were smart but the show made them dumb. It was another generic action thing, but not a good one.
