A Vision for Welcoming Western Canada Into the United States By Senator Joseph E. Martin of Maine
The strength of the United States lies in its fidelity to the Constitution, its emphasis on national sovereignty, and its roots in Western civilization, Christianity, and personal responsibility. These principles are not negotiable, and they must form the foundation of any expansion of the Union. If the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba were to seek admission into the United States, it must be as full American states not provinces with conditions or dual allegiance. They would come into the fold by the consent of their people and the invitation of a constitutional-guided republic. There would be no hybrid governance, no special cultural carve-outs, and certainly no Canadian political baggage.
