A publication I respect greatly just switched platforms, from Ghost to the odious Substack. I canceled my (paid) subscription and explained why.

The founder replied that network effects were what mattered.

Bad actors accrete power when good people rationalize the consequences of their choices.

@dangillmor@mastodon.social did you offer them the behiiv alternative? Maybe refer them here.. perhaps they'd like to be a part of the next billion dollar startup? https://www.theinformation.com/articles/beehiiv-next-billion-dollar-newsletter-startup?rc=hhpn9c

@dangillmor@mastodon.social When did the technology platform become a political decision over a technology / features decision? Ghost, Substack, Wordpress, aren’t they all blogging platforms with different feature sets? As a reader, I shouldn’t have to think about the tech platform, just the content, right?

I also got off sustack. Some stuff I read there Totally Unreliable. (I know because I live it.)
Not substack's fault I admit but the authors' are driving people away.

I feel like I need to investigate what’s up with substack

@dangillmor@mastodon.social I told the Serious Trouble podcast (https://www.serioustrouble.show/) that I would not renew my subscription for that reason, and urged them to move to Ghost. Sadly they're staying on Substack.

Another podcast I like, Left, Right & Center (
https://www.kcrw.com/news/shows/left-right-center/) recently started a Substack. I really need to talk to them about that, and maybe stop my small recurring donation to KCRW.

it is disappointing when people don't recognize that network effects can go both ways. And that in their choices, they are building the effect elsewhere.

@dangillmor@mastodon.social I got exactly the same response when I challenged the comms team at my local council. X, Facebook, Insta etc. rather than Fedi, RSS etc. :(

@dangillmor@mastodon.social The founder told you in no uncertain terms which network effects are preferred.

@dangillmor@mastodon.social yeah. It’s also what matters to the Nazis they platform. And their presence there gets them the Nazi network, and gets the Nazi network their audience. It’s a β€œvirtuous” cycle. Of shit.

@dwev@mstdn.dk @dangillmor@mastodon.social https://leavesubstack.com/ it's probably worth having a look here, they have the receipts to go with it on platforming harmful material and promoting white supremacists/neonazis
