Israel destroyed farmland in Palestine because a population able to grow some portion of its own food is somewhat more resilient to food scarcity. Note "somewhat". Don't mistake everyone urging those who've access to a little land for doomsday preppers who think they can be 100% self-sufficient. Most can't.
But growing your own potatoes? That's doable without much expertise. Don't listen to the preppers; it's hundreds of tiny actions combined that strengthen a community...and vice versa.
