I think a lot of people don't realize that the machine has always run largely on trust. Sure you do as much as you can to verify, but trust in every person choosing to do the work is the cornerstone of what has held the U.S. together since the beginning. When they were laying out the structure and the rules they basically thought that there might be a bad apple here and there but the vast majority could be trusted to be basically good people all rowing in the same direction. Well, this is what it looks like when you get all the bad apples all rowing in the same direction. Total destruction.
