This might be a slightly odd request but this is the fediverse after allβ¦
Does anyone have a sextant I can borrow?
I want to have some navigation-related activities for a workshop later in the month and this would be fun.

Alas distance makes it impossible for me to help you, but hilariously I -- someone in the middle of the #Canadian #prairies with zero access to sea or ocean, DO happen to have a #sextant.
The story of this is amusing (IMO) so please bear with me while I share. π![]()
So one day I'm at a chain #charity #secondhand goods store (#ValueVillage, in particular) and I find this weird triangular-ish item randomly among the less-categorised items.
At first I assume it is a toy: I don't keep up with modern kids' #TV or #film franchises but it looks like the sort of weird item that might get designed as some sort of #alien #weapon, especially as it was made of very dark plastic.

I should probably have mentioned Iβm in the UK

Sorry, donβt have a sextant, but I think your idea of sticking it out your window instead of using a map app would be a great way to visibly indicate you are a danger to all because you donβt know where the hell youβre going and youβre not paying attention to the road.
@rachel@norfolk.social oh wait itβs in the glovebox of my galleon
@rachel@norfolk.social Left mine with a friend on a LARP just some hours ago, sorry π![]()

I've got a couple, but US based.
You can get plastic training ones fairly cheap.
A good alternative is a demicross which can be knocked together with a couple of measuring sticks, or paper bits taped to a large construction square (used for plywood or drywall).
