I know it's more engaging this way, but it's funny to me how in sci fi shows, ships are always sending the "request permission to dock" message as they're like, meters away from the docking port.
I imagine you'd be fired upon if you got within visual range or so of most major installations without sending some kind of "I'm here it's me!" signal, let alone within ramming distance on approach vector.
