I have 2 copies of The Cage. The one on the right is in all color, and I think it came from archive.org judging by the file type. The one on the left came from somewhere, and has an introduction by Roddenberry saying that portions are in color due to footage being lost and replaced by Menagerie footage. Some is in b&w(purported to be original).
Question: Has the copy on the right been colorized, or was Roddenberry lying?

I have never heard that The Cage was originally shot on B&W. I am sure that The Menagerie was before Colorization was invented.
Do you see Gene on camera or it is just a text message?
He used to play The Cage at conventions. Maybe there was something contractual that did not give him the full original color version for that purpose.

I found this online, and it talks about it a bit...

tl;dr
It appears color frames were temporarily lost, so a working copy in b&w was spliced in. Later, color footage was found. It's unclear to me why you'd have color and b&w copies, but I don't know the nuts and bolts of film production.

Gene's definitely there. It comes off like 'A special tv presentation', where he gives an introduction, talks a tiny bit about Trek, then it goes into the show.
