Are there any history nerds out there that can describe why exactly the US went to war with Japan, or Japan went to war with the US. What was the real core problem they were trying to solve?

@arrrg@kolektiva.social America wanted as many naval fadcilities as they could get around the world to become the dominant military power against the Soviets. This meant a goodly number on the western side of the Pacific, making things closer to the USSR for bombing runs (other than over the Pole). Japan was expanding its military might through Asia, and the attack on Pearl Harbour gave them the excuse to start pushing Japan back to its original borders, as well as making it America’s host for bases there.

Also: anti-Asian bigotry.

@IanAMartin@mstdn.ca thanks, that makes sense about the military bases and japan expanding as well, along with good old fashioned racism.

@arrrg@kolektiva.social They took the same approach to covering the world as the UK did several hundred years before.

There’s always racism. Alas.
