„People who don’t work in tech, specifically in data really don’t get it based on the amount of comments talking about advertising. OP, I’m sorry I feel like this is a moral dilemma that I’m often in as well.

For those of you who think your data being collected and sold is used to give you personalized ads… that’s the very tip of the iceberg. I hire data scientists and engineers. The things I’ve heard them brag about in interviews and on resumes regarding the types of algorithms they’ve created and data they’ve collected (especially FAANG and US health insurance) are horrific.

The military has profiles on you and your loved ones made up of data collected by these companies. I had one guy talking about how much his work saved his employer (health insurance company) by using data profiles and medical codes to determine whether or not they were likely to make the company more money in the future (basically to deny early preventative claims to people whose cases were more likely to develop into something more expensive if left unaddressed). Another told me how he built an algorithm that would catch doctors who tried to admit patients through the ER via behavioural indicators from the doctors and patients (more empathic doctor and patient more likely to be poor? Probably fraud, therefore claim denial).

It’s all fine and dandy to get an ad targeted to you. But please do not delude yourselves into thinking that companies aren’t using every scrap of data out there (hell - somebody somewhere knows that I’m awake right now typing this when I’m normally asleep) to map out your behaviours, compare them to others, and use it however they see fit. This also includes information on your loved ones and people you communicate with.”
