this also has implications for a lot of what I do. i think this question spawned in my head in this shape because I've been thinking about like. the purpose of everything I'm doing. and I don't mean that my entire self worth is based on the answer to this question; if what I do is mostly engineering and not really art, that isn't the end of the world for me. engineering is cool. I would be proud to be an engineer. but I'm also doing it all for fun. I'm doing "computer engineering" things as my form of art. I've written about this before, albeit with different terminology, but the idea is the same. in that sense, I guess I already know the answer. that yes, engineering is art.

so maybe the question I'm asking is imprecise. I'm mostly just curious about what the thing that isn't engineering can be called.

because it has a name, right?

I want to call it art.

but art is clearly broader than that. yes its a subset of art, but what is
just this set of creations called.

does it even have a name?

re(previous writing):

what I failed to recognize previously is that there is a distinction between the two purposes to my creations. I said there's an irony to it, but I lacked the terminology to explain that irony.

am I sisyphus
I'm an engineer, and an artist. my engineering is my art. it's art because it's what I enjoy doing. it's engineering because it's a means to an end to create more art (which is more engineering).

without the desire to create the art, the need for the engineering is unnecessary. because they are one and the same, it is a self-perpetuating cycle.

I am sisyphus.
