I’m struck, on holiday in France, how quiet we are. The OH and I enjoy each other’s company and make gentle remarks to each other from time to time. So many people talk pretty much incessantly and very loudly. The hΓ΄tel we stayed in, in London, our neighbours talked incredibly loudly until after midnight and started again at 06:15…. Yesterday at dinner in Paris the young couple sitting next to us talked (well he talked) incessantly and loudly about himself, his work, what he wanted to see and do in Paris. They had arrived that day and seemed to be leaving the next. There was less than 5 inches between the tables so all we could do was listen, and we eventually resorted to texting each other. On the TGV this morning was a woman on the phone: loud, rapid talking which was heard pretty much throughout the carriage. These different instances were all different genders, ages and nationalities but none seemed to have the ability to modify their volume or tone because they were in shared public spaces. I feel very rural and small in contrast.
