@alexadeswift@lgbtqia.space @StillIRise1963@mastodon.world Interestingly, Neanderthals had their own MC1R gene variants, which means there where fair skinned and red haired Neanderthals, but modern humans, despite inheriting something from them have their own MC1R gene variants.
So it didn't provide enough advantage early on. Modern humans were still black when the Neanderthals vanished.

@forthy42@mastodon.net2o.de @StillIRise1963@mastodon.world well, modern Europeans were, and Neanderthals were mostly concentrated in Europe with the potentially related Denisovans concentrated in Asia.
It would seem that Europeans were black or brown even after the end of the late Ice Age, and possibly as recently as 6000 YBP, if figures I have heard are correct.
