before 1886, in amsterdam, there was a game known as palingtrekken (eel pulling).
the game consisted of hanging an eel on a rope that was stretched across a canal. players had to sail underneath the rope and attempt to grab the (slippery) eel while sailing underneath it.
the dutch government outlawed this game because it was too cruel. on 25 july 1886, the police attempted to cut the rope the eel was hanging from.
this lead to the spectators of the game turning on the police. they managed to get things under control by 22:00.
the next day, they lost control of the situation. residents surrounded the police station with sticks and rods. the police called reinforcements, and then the residents pelted the police with various objects. eventually, the army was called in and shot back with live ammunition.
26 people died.
