They're born with what look like full sized feet. Evolution has a sense of humour, sometimes.

A pūkeko chick. The beak and feathers are black, unlike the adults.
The legs account for most of the chick's height.
The feet have three forward facing toes and one backwards facing. From front to back the feet are almost as long as the body.
