In the industrialized world they are mostly pets. But many people keep them as guard animals for other livestock since they are brave and chase off predators. Some folks ride them or train them to pull carts so they can be in parades or shows. But in most of the world donkeys take the role of the pickup truck and are a cornerstone of the economy.
