the best thing about—most—humour that sparks laughter is that it requires making people think in a creative way, whether they want it or not, since most humour is bringing together disconnected things with a lingering,—usually nonsensical—connection that has to be discovered.

Philosopher Thomas Hobbes wrote that laughter is “a sudden glory, arising from sudden conception of some eminency in ourselves, by comparison with the infirmity of others, or with our own formerly”.
Interpretation: we laugh when we are good, when others are not, or at our previous (not good) selves.
