sometimes, data segregation is a useful security layer. more often with web sites, it's just the most visible sign of lousy coding/engineering...
me, logging into a site i haven't logged into in a while:
- huh. invalid password. it's in my password safe but maybe they age them out silently.
- "forgot password, please email reset link"
- error message "unknown email"
- ok... re-registering.
- userid already in use...
- re-enter and add digit.
- email already in use. really? the one you said didn't exist?
- re-enter and add digit
- add password
- update profile. add phone number. finds all my old stuff and restores it to the new login/uid.
grr....
