Brutkey

He just loves it here. His whole personality changes by the ocean.
(Mine too!); he's so contented.
(Probably because he can escape from 'his brudder by another mudder' all day. After breakfast he's at the door to spend the day outside.
He sleeps by the door, so no one can go out without him. Then, he goes on the patio and sleeps?
I think he just likes the cool salt air.
Me too.

Totally relaxed & obviously feeling super secure.

@feather1952@aus.social He's sneaking too far away, and we had to keep him inside until we are outside or he goes in the kennel. (It's a cattery, three extra large dog kennels, one enclosed for bathroom privacy, with one room filled with bottomless buckets like gerbil tubes, and scratch pads, food and water. I'm sure Jasper would stay out all night. But he can't, and he can't go out alone, he's wandering to the front yard. Driveway, Road, Highway, dead cat.
So. .Backyard he's got an acre to the ocean. He knows when I catch him, he goes in the kennel.
But he likes to watch me work, so I opened the portable 4x4 folding kennel, and put it where I was shoveling. I forgot to lock the door but he was safe and happy watching me. I went out of sight and he followed me! He was just in there because he wanted to be. He likes to be near people. My wife laughs from the window, my
puppy follows me watering plants with a container. He sits, I water, I move, he moves, he sits, I water, next. LOL

I understand & it seems to me that he does too.
I believe cats pick their people & they make it known if you’re accepted or not & will adapt & adapt accordingly to your rules. Cat runs are awesome especially in areas where there is a highway or in built up areas.
I’m more a dog person & even though I’m nervous & less trusting of the bigger ones, they do tend to gravitate towards me anyway

@feather1952@aus.social We're back at our rural home. Last time we lived here, we had dogs. This much space, on the ocean. I had a male Black Lab.
It's easier to train a male, you (me) pee in a spray bottle and take short leash. You walk the new male around the property line and you stop and spray the trees or bushes at the property line. The dog will also want to wet that area now. Once his scent defines his territory, nothing goes in or out past that line. He could run free, swim, catch mink on the shore. .Had all kinds of fun. Then we moved to the city. It wasn't fair for that dog to be in an apartment, so we found a big house and a family that pampers pets, and we rehomed him.
Then we became cat people. But now that we are back on the ocean, I'd like a dog, but I have to consider other people. I've outlived my family tree, but cats and dogs can live 20years past me. I don't want to burden family members to accept my late-life choices. These will be the last two cats. Pets constrain you. Or I'd raise a pig again

Sounds like your dog had his best life too & being pack animals, you were his pack.
I’ve had both & while I love both I do prefer dogs for me. The last 5yrs or so I’ve been travelling a little doing house sitting both cats & dogs & I have regulars. I’ve occasionally thought I’d like my own pet again but it would restrict me more & then there’s the vet bills. So I get my pet fix that way for now until the time comes to slow down.

@feather1952@aus.social My friend in Missouri was sheltering cats for the overflow I think, the vet bills come under the shelter but she had a cat room, a large sunroom play area and would spend her morning coffee socializing with them and caring for them. I wanted to go away for a weekend and could not find a motel that would allow cats, so I was going to board them Friday-Saturday $300!!! I found a motel that allowed me, so we took them, the motel was less for that boarding them.

Yeah, I totally get it & the reason I have no pets of my own right now.
Still, doing what I do I get to spend time in different places, some of them I’ve made new friends at. It’s a win win for me.

@feather1952@aus.social My city neighbour had pitbulls, they have a bad name, he raised them right and they adored me. Lola, he current one, I have a photo as a pup then 6 months later, she's huge, and cries to see me when I visit. When the owner screams at her for not coming, she comes to me instead. He's convinced I'm a dog whisperer
