I have never understood the people who describe themselves as free thinkers, and then get all their opinions from a YouTuber in a basement called FredGuns2047Pizza.

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social "Free-as-in-beer thinkers".

It's hard to come up with one's own critical thinking, might as well parrot someone else's thoughts without paying attention to its quality.

Is this the estranged sibling of "do your own research"? The one where most people fall at Step 1: "Recognise that you aren't equipped to replicate a lifetime's worth of study and dedication to a specialist area of knowledge by watching a TikTok video over lunch, and defer instead to teams of people across the globe who have."

Asking questions is good, absolutely, more people should challenge what they read/hear. But if they're dismissing offhand a well-establish theory or a widely accepted fact then they must either be a genius (which of course may be possible) or a moron. Place your bets.

@Wifiwits@infosec.exchange @hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social After you ask the question, you're supposed to try and answer it using the best information available to you. Skepticism with no follow through is going to destroy everything we hold dear.

@guitarfosec@cyberplace.social @hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social in general I find they’ve already found the answer they want and nothing is being asked on good faith
