It seems rich lefties are baffled as to why, during a "cost-of-living" (poverty) crisis, crime is going up and up.

A lot of really smart people miss some pretty basic shit when it comes to poverty. You can reduce our rents, you can offer us programs, but if you don't give us enough money to live, you're forcing us to give up some of our dignity to survive.

This is the intent of a cruel unemployment system. Remove dignity to drive people into work.

Except, it doesn't work like that.

Once you start removing people's dignity by forcing them to skip meals, rummage through bins, or beg on the street, it's much easier to see yourself as no longer being part of the society you exist in.

When the needle tips far enough, crime seems less ethically fraught.

The easiest way to reduce crime is to raise the rate

@sortius@infosec.exchange @hailey@hails.org What makes these rich people lefties? Have they done something heinous like argued for improving the unemployment system?

@caoilte@mastodon.social @hailey@hails.org never heard of champagne lefties? Are you too young to know this term?

@sortius@infosec.exchange we had "champagne socialists" in UK until mid 2000s, but it fell out of favour as media stopped pretending Labour party was left wing.

I still don't understand why you're singling out rich lefties for not understanding the link between cost of living and crime.

In my experience rich, poor, left and right can be equally bad at understanding the connection.

I would expect political background to only start correlating once you start discussing solutions to the problem.

@caoilte@mastodon.social well, seeing as you seem like a rich leftie, because, well, you're getting touchy about this, I'll give you this clue: us poor people know who's rich, so if you're unsure, you probably are
