I really think a bunch of nerds could come together and build a bad ass company/non-profit whatever that does tech the right way and we all live happy lives ... not millionaires, but live dignified lives doing useful, interesting work.

No hierarchy. It's just one hundred percent employee owned and operated. No one makes more money than anyone else based on seniority - a union shop.

All of the "profits" are divided up for all of the employees based on the contract. Everyone knows what everyone else makes. While we can hire as many people as we want, the more people we hire, the less money we make. So we'd want to be strategic about adding new members/employees.

This has been my dream since I started in tech back in the 90s - the nineteen fucking nineties. I think if I were more social and a better leader, I could make something happen. I keep looking for someone else who thinks it's a cool idea too, but I think most people think it's risky.

Its unfortunate just how safe it is to sell your soul to a FANG for 10 years and then settle in to some small scale gig.

HELL I'd love to work with a community first team just trying to not be evil.

But between the FOSS community and the FAANG establishment, there isn't much room for that middle tier of wholesome union tech work. Most of that space is filled with start ups, contractors, and gig workers.

I have always wanted to offer cheap tech support for grandmas and accessible data centers for new devs and sys admins.
