This is the corner of a hand-sewn #sail made in the #1800s. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are truly remarkableβa skill that has largely become a lost art.
Canvas sails like this were made from hemp, which was also used in clothing, ropes, and even the caulking that sealed gaps between ship planks. Hemp was favored over materials like jute because it was three times stronger and resistant to saltwater..

@globalmuseum@mastodon.online my dad was ex-Royal Navy, and a yachtsman from way back. I can still remember sewing our sails, getting those strengthening patterns - albeit to a much lesser degree - adding reefing holes, stuff like that.
Just knots alone are being lost to time, because no one teaches knot tying these days
