As much as I love my trike, some things are a pain in the ass. Like adding powered accessories…

I should have a OEM harness for stuff to tap into instead of running wires. Especially considering the cost of a
#harleydavidson. Of course they have updated the model line so the new RG3 has the updated electronics, I am dealing with figuring out solutions that didn’t exist when I bought it.

I need to use my GPS and that kills my phone battery. My speaker has power but it’s barely enough with the GPS. Solution is to run 12v to my bars with a charging mount, upgrading the mount I have to include power. I am going to use a ball mount and center it up on the bars. I may have to get rid of my windscreen bag for some room. I can find a smaller one.

@leerayl@infosec.exchange if you have a battery tender lead with an SAE plug on it installed on the bike, there's an SAE to USB-A adapter (made by battery tender) to get an easy extra USB power line with minimal wiring needed. Been running dash mounted phones with that setup on several bikes now.

@dandrumheller@mstdn.social heh, I actually picked up the newer version with USB-A and USB-C over the weekend.

I am thinking through mounting options for it. I am going to run wires for it to the bars and to the trunk of my trike so I can have options. I also picked up a waterproof CarPlay screen to play with as well. It would be ideal so I can keep my phone off my bars. I just want to see my map :)

@leerayl@infosec.exchange I've been kicking around the idea of those waterproof car play screens as well!

My previous bike had an old Garmin GPS cradle on the fairing - I attached a rugged phone case to the weather cover for the cradle to mount the phone.

There are tons of options for 1" RAM style ball mounts - they work well and are reasonably unobtrusive. Do you have a full fairing, or just a windshield?

@dandrumheller@mstdn.social I just put my RAM ball on this set of bars. I do have a windshield (no fairing). I did invest in SP Connect which has a decent set of cases and mount options but if the CarPlay thing works, I will move that way. Waterproof and easy glove use was a big factor so if those prove true, it may be the best of both worlds
