Hitching the viability of your business to a third-party that (i) owes you precisely nothing and (ii) has a long, storied history of fucking over its users is most definitely a "you" problem.

@MattHatton@aus.social When a platform is hostile to its users, it is incumbent on those users to withdraw their support. Users stubbornly pretending otherwise is what allows these platforms to carry on with their amoral and immoral business practices.
When your complaints always fall on deaf ears, that should tell you something.
@MattHatton@aus.social this feels like a new version of me getting abused as an onsite tech with βfix my computer in the next 20 minutes i need it for (very important thing)!β and me internally yelling βif it's so important why didn't you have a 2nd computer or some sort of plan for when it breaks!!!β
@decryption@aus.social It's absolutely that. And it's also a direct follow-on from "Google changed its algorithm and now my business is failing", adjacent to "the new metro station took away my cafe customers".
None of it is anyone's problem but yours, my dudes.

@MattHatton@aus.social @decryption@aus.social it gets less clear cut when you have a company (or government!) abusing monopoly power in a market, as Google and Facebook absolutely have done, many times, for years.

@daedalus@eigenmagic.net @decryption@aus.social Yeah, this is the other side of it.
We, as consumers, hold a level of responsibility for this as well.
But ultimately, to my mind, if your customers don't value what you offer enough to go and find you then...I dunno. I guess the value you thought you were adding to their lives was miusjudged.

@MattHatton@aus.social @daedalus@eigenmagic.net @decryption@aus.social why would you expect anyone to do anything but put their business where the customers are, morals bedamned?

@franksting@theblower.au @daedalus@eigenmagic.net @decryption@aus.social I'm not saying don't do Plan a, but if you're so shit-hot at business and determined to make your enterprise successful perhaps do a little more than have Plan B being "moaning about Plan A not working out".

@MattHatton@aus.social @franksting@theblower.au @daedalus@eigenmagic.net exactly - to be naive of this situation isn't really an excuse in 2025, we've had computers and the internet and arsehole companies lording it over us for a long time now! it's pretty naive not to have some sort of plan or at least awareness of this scenario

@decryption@aus.social @MattHatton@aus.social @franksting@theblower.au I'm a little reluctant to victim-blame too hard, especially when their account gets reinstated after a journo writes it up (https://bsky.app/profile/joshtaylor.bsky.social/post/3lvrcgalhas2u) and it looks like an uptick in automated scans for CSAM might be the cause⦠given the stupid teen socmed ban and the UK's Online Safety Act shenanigans.
If you have a makeup business, how are people supposed to find you without an online presence here in 2025? And what do most people use to find services like this? What do you suggest they should do instead of hanging out where their potential customers are?

@daedalus@eigenmagic.net @MattHatton@aus.social @franksting@theblower.au both things can be true - the situation sucks, but also, be aware of the situation and have a plan (also join the fight to stop this happening instead of walking away happy after complaining to the media that you personally were impacted)

@decryption@aus.social @MattHatton@aus.social @franksting@theblower.au Indeed! I don't know that they'll be inclined to join us if we yell at them and call them stupid, though.

@daedalus@eigenmagic.net @MattHatton@aus.social @franksting@theblower.au we are amongst friends here right?? let me vent

@decryption@aus.social @daedalus@eigenmagic.net @franksting@theblower.au Part of my frustration is that we* have been saying it nicely for a long time. To both businesses and consumers. And the response has been a near-universal shrug of the shoulders and "yeah, but..."
Sow, reap.
