I'm not so sure it's so much a "cause" as indicates who may be vulnerable.

I had ME in the nineties following a bout of labyrinthitis. I was lucky that my GP, and the Consultant to whom I was referred, accepted ME's existence. They had no answers (obviously) but the inflammation markers in my blood were sky high so they agreed 'something was going on'.

I eventually recovered, but don't believe I was ever quite the same again.

It's like some types of cancer, just because your DNA suggests you're more likely to get it, it doesn't mean you necessarily will. This seems to indicate who might be at risk having ME triggered by something, like a viral infection, but not everyone's triggers will be the same or even their bloodwork results.
