The local waste processing facility (or The Dump for short) of the area where the spousal unit's family cottage is has a barn where you can browse somewhat usable household items, books, records, furniture, etc. that local residents and cottage owners have dropped off for disposal. You can take whatever you want from the mall for a donation (they're not picky about the amount). The barn is called the Machar Mall.

In 2021, someone found a painting by David Bowie, worth $50K there. It made national news and a lot of friends and relatives asked if it had been one of us who found it since they knew we were regular customers of the mall. Alas, it wasn't any of us. But we've found some much smaller treasures there over the years.

The Dump is also a good place to spot black bears. It always makes me sad to see the poor bears scavenge for scraps to eat there. We didn't see any the last time we went a couple of days ago. Hopefully it means they get enough food to eat back in the woods and not because the population has dwindled drastically.

Recently, my in-laws took a mall-obsessed Eastern European exchange student to Machar Mall for a laugh. Needless to say, they weren't impressed.
😂😂 They weren't impressed with thrift stores either. Well, it's their loss, I guess!
