this merits its own post, but i actually lived without a cell phone for over a year somewhere between 2020 and now (too tired to remember exactly when, time is hard) and it was, on the one hand, really nice, but on the other, wild how much of the world you get locked out of due to not having SMS authentication capabilities

i had a landline but a lot of companies won't let you do a call instead of a text for a code anymore

oh no, the ones won't allow you to make an account at all without an SMS message, no ability to get a call are just "trying to prove you're real"
