I read Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” (1850) for a few reasons, one was shame — my shame that it’s the only book I ever skipped reading and bought the Cliff notes for in college. 25+ years later I’ve righted the wrong and read this weird, wonderful, and occasionally confounding book. Sure, Hawthorne’s style can be labored and obtuse, but also startlingly metafictive. In fact it’s the modes of storytelling that partially make it so interesting.
