Friend of a friend reports that another friend got a job in tech straight out of university, zero experience, because they had learned three medieval languages for their degree, and could read a #knitting pattern.

The interviewer allegedly said:

"Well, you won't have any problems learning to code, will you !!"

@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz I just sat in on a knitting workshop at an open source conference. Fiber arts are popular among open source people.

@wynke@mendeddrum.org ... and among maths people. The @MathsJam@mathstodon.xyz Annual Gathering, aka @BigMathsJam@mathstodon.xyz , always has an activity table of people doing, demonstrating, and learning various #FibreArts, including #knitting

Very popular.

@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz @MathsJam@mathstodon.xyz @BigMathsJam@mathstodon.xyz I'm both a computer person and a maths person, and I was doing fiber crafts before I was even aware that I was either of those.

I have a booklet somewhere that is aimed at later years of high school, that is about math and knitting. (In Dutch, otherwise I'd have been looking up a link right now.)

@wynke@mendeddrum.org The connection between maths and fiber crafts is anecdotally well-established, similarly to maths and music, maths and juggling, etc.

I'd be interested in the booklet you mention. No rush, just make a note of my interest, and if you happen to find it, let me know.

@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz @MathsJam@mathstodon.xyz @BigMathsJam@mathstodon.xyz I arrived home since and have found it. It's part of the 'Zebra-reeks', which is a Dutch series of mathematical materials that aren't part of the standard curriculum, aimed at the final years of the highest level of high school (pre-university) in the Netherlands.
