@RickiTarr@beige.party This has got all hallmarks of the Fantasy Trope: The Long Forgotten Evilβ„’β„’

An ancient evil is almost (but not-yet-quite-completely) vanquished by the heroes.

As they move on and the society recovers - slowly but surely most everyone who remembers the actual evil starts to die (of old age - the heroes won and it's a happily-ever-after scenario - aside from the almost-vanquished-yet-most-certainly-lying-in-wait-as-it-gathers-its-strength ancient evil).

Slowly but surely - the tales of the ancient evil get muddled and watered down over each retelling over the generations - to the point many doubt whether there actually was a Festering Ancient Evil Bent On Consuming The World at all, and if the stories were more an allegory - a way to get ornery children to listen to their parents.

And slowly but surely - time marches on, and the legends who slew the Ancient Festering Evil are long forgotten, as is the existence of the very ancient evil itself.

Until. . . .

A plucky hero(ine) comes along - accidentally finds and ancient tome containing ancient knowledge and Forbidden Incantations©©.

Their finding the ancient forbidden knowledge seems almost . . . guided, as if by some being or intelligence that yearns for freedom, now eagerly aware that no one remembers the ancient horrors.

The hero(ine)'s curiosity about this ancient knowledge - insatiable. The opening and reading of the ancient text is almost pre-ordained at this point.

And with a flash of lightning - and the billowing of sulfurous smoke after the words are spoken - The Long Forgotten Ancient Evil Who Has Been Awaiting This Day And Biding Its Time - is now free.

--==DID YOU WANT HELP?==--

(Or to paraphrase Sterling Archer: DO YOU WANT ANCIENT HORRORS BEYOND THE COMPREHENSION OF MAN? BECAUSE THIS IS HOW YOU GET ANCIENT HORRORS BEYOND THE COMPREHENSION OF MAN!)
