So, I've done versions of this thread on Twitter a couple of times, but maybe it's time for one here. If you live in the US, you should decide if you're planning on fighting in the coming civil war or leaving. If you're white, cis-passing, and have both money and no particular ethics, you can probably ignore this choice, but I hope you burn for doing so.

To be clear, if you have means and privilege, live in the US and and aren't at elevated risk, you should stay and figure out how you can help with the resistance. Leaving is for folks who need to.

Yes, and...

There are intermediate options that are safer than staying exactly as is, but may be more manageable than relocating internationally:

- internal relocation - stay in the US, but move to a different, safer, part of it.

- split the family - send one or more of your adult children or siblings somewhere safer.

The point about red lines is important; saying "I'll leave before it gets too bad" doesn't help unless you have some clear trigger for the next 'investment' towards leaving.

Speaking of investments in mobility,
@JiSe@infosec.exchange's point is good: passports are relatively low cost in money but can take a long time. If you wait until things are clearly bad, that's too late.

A bank account that you can access from overseas is another thing that takes time, is important, and isn't necessarily expensive.

Even knowing just where you would want to go can take time and planning.

If anyone even thinks they might maybe one day need these things, they should do these things now.
