I understand that #ATproto should be for everyone, but decentralization means you don't have to allow everyone on your server. They can run their own and everyone can decide how to deal with that. The company doesn't need to make these decisions. She knows this.

When we call it #CultureWar, it then implies that our real enemy is those who are pushing the conflict. Wars are always manufactured. We've had different experiences and so see the world differently, but the natural response is empathy and trying to understand each other.
Our fight is with those who try to make us distrust and hate each other. Who push division for attention and profit. That's who we must defeat together. The yellers on TV and alt media. The owners of the triggering algos.

We need web and roku versions of the #peertube app. They should probably support #owncast as well. That's the only way we're gonna compete against YouTube. I know it's weird cause we're decentralized but please look at what #pocketcasts built for podcasts. they also had that problem and found something that works (without the social graph of course). constantly sending people to different peertube servers is chaos.
side note: so many podcasts don't have their own websites today. ridiculous.
Sling TV is rolling out day, weekend and week long passes. Obviously because of football. It sure seems like the NCAA could make a lot of money and fix the TV confusion and the conference chaos if they just started their own streaming service. Something similar could be done with the NFL.
Most new media (or alt media etc) isn't anti establishment or anti corporate. It just plays to a different model for getting unearned attention. Serving the demands of the owners of big tech instead of big media. Playing to algos instead of the branding that businesses want to be associated with.
We need a term for media that truly chooses to push back on the corrupted culture. To be fully independent. To rely exclusively on the recommendations and support of the people. #DemocracyOfReach
Just realized that the jingles that dominate #GenX headspace are a perfect example of this phenomenon. We know so many of them so well instead of the news etc which might have led us to not be Trump's most favorable demographic.

the mostly public sites that allow all of us together to decide what info, art and views deserve cultural attention and where money cannot be used to buy more influence, that's social media.
the messaging and group tech we use to talk to our friends, family and communities more privately, that's social networking.
the platforms with corporate algos that fuck with our brains for the benefit of their owners and advertisers and data mining, they're digital cults.

At a personal level, maybe using algo-driven & ad-supported social media seems fine. That's really what most media is. Radio & TV have always done this, deciding what comes next. Most streaming options will auto play something now too. Fine.
The problem is at the collective level. A world where a few corporations have so much control over what everyone pays attention to is not a healthy society. It's bad for democracy. Breaking this cycle is why the #fediverse matters. Here, we decide together.
