@mayintoronto@beige.party @cks@mastodon.social I left in 2017, having written about a particular poisonous environment. Went into program delivery at the federal level in 2018. Bounced around several interesting projects, and am fully back at enterprise IT architecture since early 2024.
How do I walk away? Poorly. By the light of the bridges I burn: bridges that refuse to collapse.
At eighty I will be a poet of DHCP, X.509, and NAT: weeping among the ruins and beating my well muscled chest about paradises that were never within reach.
noisy stairs, contextual signalling
In The Brides of High Hill, there is a set of stairs that makes a sound when an unwary person steps on them. Once cleric Chih discovers this, they note it and remember to jump over the stairs to avoid alerting others.
I have experienced situations where someone quietly jumped over the stairs, both to avoid calling attention to themself and to inform their peers. Those who would react to the sound are usually oblivious to the silences and their meaning.
