We’re giving away an old sofa and an older couple came by to look at it. It came up that we live in Chicago.

“Oh well it’s way safer here (in Kauai)”

Me: Chicago gets a bad reputation, it isn’t that dangerous.

Woman: well I used to live near Chicago - in Indiana. So I know…

Me: Chicago is not dangerous.

Woman: well, not the whole area but the city is.

Me: The whole city? While there are parts of the city that are more dangerous, I’ve been in them multiple times and hey I’m still here.

Next time I’m just going to say “yeah that’s a common racist right wing talking point” and wait for the blank stares.

I knew this was coming. I’ve been reviewing online medical content for years, which has been a mix of personal stories about coping with various illnesses and educational articles on mental health diagnoses and treatments. I’ve now gotten 2 articles clearly written by AI. They’re the garbage you’d expect and I’ve made it known in my reviews I recognize it’s AI slop.

I’m not sure how much longer I’ll do this work, because they’ll either fire me for being an asshole, or not give a shit about medical review any more and just churn out trash. I also want no part of training AI models. Blarg.

Even in the rain this place is fucking magnificent.

Looking out over a fjord from high up the mountainside a boat carves a white line through the teal-blue water. It’s cloudy but the sun has found an opening to shine brightly down onto the mountain in the distance, right into a small valley between 2 peaks. The light is also reflected below on the surface of the water where it meets the mountain. There’s rain falling in the far distance on the left side of the picture, obscuring more peaks in a grey mist. No alt text will do Norway justice, but I’m trying.
