Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, some of you have expressed the desire to offer a bit of support to BSD Cafe. In response, I've set up a Ko-fi page and a LiberaPay account for the project. You can now buy a coffee for BSD Cafe at this link: https://ko-fi.com/bsdcafe or https://liberapay.com/bsdcafe
Excited to present the first building block of the BSD Cafe project! When I registered this domain months ago, I envisioned a themed bar where we can casually chat about *BSD systems, Linux, and Open-Source technology among friends, acquaintances, and patrons. But like any bar, discussions can cover a wide range of topics while respecting everyone.
BSD.cafe will be a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD.
The first brick is a new Mastodon instance, a gateway to the Fediverse. Registration is open, and the server will be moderated under clear guidelines promoting good behavior and zero tolerance for hate towards anyone. Inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue are the key values of this new instance.
The main server is currently hosted in Finland on a small VM, based on #FreeBSD. Services are divided into VNET jails, connected in a LAN via a local bridge. A VPN system is also present and have been able to move individual jails to different, more powerful, machines.
Multimedia data and cache are hosted on another physical server (FreeBSD, within a jail), with Cloudflare in front. The aim is to cache and geodistribute data, reducing network traffic on the main VPS.
Reverse proxy (frontend), mail server, media server, and the instance itself are reachable via #ipv6.
The instance started empty. No unnecessary content was pre-loaded; I want it to grow organically based on users' interests and following. There won't be any preemptive blocks at this stage. Users are encouraged to promptly report anything they find worth flagging.
Join us at https://mastodon.bsd.cafe to build a constructive and inclusive communityβa safe and relaxing space for everyone.
Our wiki, located at https://wiki.bsd.cafe, features essential links and articles related to the BSD world. It provides an overview of the tools, services, rules, uptime, and more information about the BSD Cafe Services.
A Matrix server, a Miniflux RSS Reader, the Wiki itself, and the BlendIT Lemmy instance are all part of the BSD Cafe services, with more to come.
I'm glad to meet you! I'm the main administrator of the bsd.cafe instance (and other projects), a computer science enthusiast who's been fascinated by technology since childhood. I'm a big supporter of open-source solutions and enjoy working with #BSDs and #Linux systems. I enjoy #music and #photography. I've been an avid traveler and am now looking forward to getting back to traveling.I'm married to a wonderful wife and strive to live each day with a positive attitude, making the most of every day to improve our lives.
I like writing blog articles, especially tech ones (https://it-notes.dragas.net) and, from time to time, some of them are widely appreciated, especially in the open-source community.
Thank you for passing by and reading my introduction, enjoy your stay here in the #fediverse
This morning I was thinking about something: one of the reasons why every enthusiast should consider going to a BSDCon is simple.
I eat a lot and I still come back slimmer π
2024 - EuroBSDCon: ate twice as much as usual, came back from Dublin 1 kg lighter. 2025 - BSDCan: breakfasts that could cover a whole dayβs calories, huge delicious meals... came back from Ottawa 0.5 kg lighter. 2025 - EuroBSDCon: double breakfast (sweet + savory), massive lunches, delicious dinners (including a huge pizza, as @outofcreativity@exquisite.social, @angie@exquisite.social and @mwl@io.mwl.io can confirm) and still came back 0.5 kg lighter.
Positive emotions burn calories.
So come to BSDCons: youβll come back happy and slimmer!
Dear friends, unfortunately these past few weeks haven't been easy, and the next ones will probably be similar. A series of family issues to deal with, along with work to keep going, are taking away the time I can devote to other activities. This means I'll be a bit less present online, and the new projects coming up will have to wait, at least for a while, but they're still on the way.
They say AI isnβt profitable. Thatβs not true. Twice just this past week, Iβve been contacted and paid to fix problems caused by developers who relied on AI to configure servers.
Friends of the #Fediverse - I need some information about good apps for iOS. On Android, my favourite is #Moshidon but I also like #Tusky or #Pachli or #Fedilab etc.
On iOS, I remember I was using (back in 2022/early 2023) #Icecubes and #Tusker - which looks nice but I canβt find the quote post option.
I just nearly had a heart attack. A pigeon slammed into the closed window of my study, barely half a meter from me. It's not even the first time it's happened. It's got to be an idiot, considering the glass is so dirty thereβs no way it couldn't see it...
Dear 2026, can we please stop making me jump every single day?
The building manager contacted me. He'll send an email reminding everyone not to flush things down the toilet.
I asked him to contact the residents involved directly - since only a few apartments share that specific sewage line - but he refused, saying he "can't accuse anyone". I'm not trying to accuse anyone. I just want everyone informed about what happened so they can be more careful.
Anyway, let's wait and see. The insurance should cover the damage (how exactly is still unknown), but itβs not certain since it was caused by misuse.
I'll try to get things sorted in the coming days.
All I want is to avoid another #Crapturday like yesterday!
This afternoon, after lunch, I laid down for a bit and opened my security camera app. As soon as I opened the office feed, I jumped: the floor was covered in water. I bolted out of bed, grabbed a quick coffee, and raced to the office.
The moment I opened the door, the scene was way worse than I had imagined. It wasn't water; it was sewage. It had backed up through the toilet and flooded everything. It must have come up with some force, too, because the toilet and the floor around it were... well, let's just say it was a splatter scene, worse than any horror movie I've ever seen.
Of course, since it's Saturday afternoon, the building manager is unreachable. I managed to get a hold of a drainage company, but they won't be able to actually do the job until Monday. However, the owner of the company rushed over and at least managed to unblock the main drain.
It looks like someone on the upper floors (probably the University students on the top floor) had been flushing napkins, dental floss, hair, tissues, pads, etc., which created a clog at the outlet to the public sewers. The last video I saw from the camera was from Thursday morning, and it was still dry back then. Basically, every time someone upstairs used the bathroom, everything they flushed ended up in my office.
So, would it be fair to say Iβve had a shitty afternoon?
