A quick bit of advice if you´re writing anything that other people are meant to read and understand:

1. Decide which points you want to make.
2. Use simple words and short sentences.
3. Use active voice, to make clear who does what.

Congratulations, your writing is now 80% better.

I’m this middle-aged dad from Germany. I have a wonderful partner, 4 kids and a cat.

I care about society and technology. A retired #FOSS activist, these days I work at a globocorp doing IT stuff for trains 🚄🚄

My interests include baking #bread, #fermenting stuff, paddling a whitewater #kayak, n00bing around with #Python, #RaspberryPi and #arduino, and oh so many books.

There’s never enough time, and I haven’t been bored in more than a decade.

Die aktuelle "Bundesregierung will auch auf Wasserstoff aus Erdgas setzen" - aber kein Unternehmen, das bei Verstand ist, wird da mitziehen.

Es ist doch sonnenklar, dass wir in spätestens 10 Jahren (eigentlich: gestern) kein Erdgas mehr verbrennen können, um Wasserstoff zu erzeugen. Unternehmer*innen, die da trotzdem einsteigen, haben sich ihren Termin beim Konkursgericht ehrlich verdient.

So, what about cheap copies of #Apple #AirTags? Any good?

I'm looking for a device that does the same things as an AirTag, at a lower price. iOS only is fine. Vendor apps are a no-no.

Any advice? Or am I better off buying the original thing?

Note that this isn't a fast machine. It's a Microsoft Surface Go 1st gen, from 2018.

IIRC it was greeted with cries of "underpowered & overpriced" when it came out.

The full disk encryption is adding some time to the install process.

It's tempting to use the time to check eBay for more 2nd hand hardware to slap Linux on, but then I will risk turning into @neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk at some point.

Needed two attempts to make the boot device, because I pulled it out early the first time*.

Then spent 20mins figuring out the bit about the grub shell. I remembered that something was funny there, but didn't recall what exactly.

Long shot, but: I have a machine with #Debian installed. Is there a way to add full disk encryption?

And if that way exists, is it easier / quicker than just reinstalling the damn thing from scratch?

EDIT: Qualified guidance received. Will reinstall. Thanks everyone!

(For those who haven't done this before: Installing Debian is a breeze. 15min to first login usually, and then maybe another hour configuring stuff, if that much.)

OK, made a boot device and figured out (again!) how to boot from USB on the Surface (on boot, hit Esc to enter the grub shell, then enter "exit", and off you go)
