New #Introduction at Fediscience:
I'm an environmental scientist with an interest in the night, and how we change it with artificial light.
I am Canadian and live in Germany. I most frequently post about science and #LightPollution.
In the photo below, the light was installed backwards, so that it shone on the flowers instead of the stairs... for a decade π€¦ββοΈ
It looks like I will probably be able to offer a funded PhD position in #RemoteSensing using nighttime lights this fall. If you are interested yourself, or if you know someone who might be interested, please direct them to contact me.

I love the example of the church. There are so many churches in Europe that have terrible, wasteful floodlights, and they are missing out on the opportunity to do something much more creative with much lower environmental impact.

I'm in Dresden for family reasons. I was waiting at a tram stop, and some guy tried to start a conversation with me about why there are so many AuslΓ€nder (foreigners) here and where I think some other guys on the platform must come from. But I didn't realize what he was going on about at first - I thought he was going to ask me for money.
I must have had a confused look on my face as I responded "lots of people speak Spanish, including lots of people born in Germany. It's a really useful language, especially if you want to travel."
When I said that, he got a shocked look on his face, and only then did I clue in on to how he had expected me to react. (He probably also worked out from my accent that I'm also a migrant.)
I wish I had worked out what was going on earlier, because then I could have been like "ahhh, you're one of those people that's making the hotels here so cheap even though it's peak season".
