The Partial Historians

Here we see the panel as it appears today housed in the purpose-built museum in Rome, the central figure, identified variously as Roma, Tellus, Ceres amongst others who holds two infants. She is accompanied by lesser divinities as well as variety of real and imagined animals as well as a range of flowering and fruiting plants. The sense of abundance is palpable. 4e457e973f533d97.jpeg The second version of the panel is a posited reconstruction of how it might have looked like when originally completed, painted to bring the scene to life. Other reconstructions use much more saturated colours which may also be plausible. f899459055efa74d.jpeg Dr Rad and Dr G smiling and making funny faces while wearing headphones. Text above and below photo reads, β€œThe Partial Historians, loving ancient history since well before MMXIII’. d2bc9cc80af000a9.png Image description: Dionysus rides side-saddle on the back of a panther with a ribboned thyrsus (a pine-cone tipped staff) in one hand and a tambourine in the other. Dionysus wears flowing robes and a crown of foliage and flowers. 141585dbcc141b18.jpeg Description from the Met: β€œDemeter, the goddess of agricultural abundance, stands at the left, clad in a peplos and himation (cloak) and holding a scepter. At the right is Persephone, her daughter and the wife of Hades, the god of the underworld. She is dressed in a chiton and himation. Each goddess extends her right hand toward a nude youth, but it is no longer possible to determine what they held. The boy is thought to be Triptolemos, who was sent by Demeter to teach men how to cultivate grain. The original marble relief was found at the sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis. The original Greek work and a number of Roman copies survive. Here the ten Roman fragments are embedded in a cast of the Greek relief.β€œ 679924e3031f2ab6.jpeg
