If you are bored with or wonder why I share so much technical stuff in bursts, let me explain. I am privileged. I can afford to run several servers and a cute homelab. I have 30+ years of experience with Linux and Free and Open Source Software. It is my belief that I must use my privilege to share as much as I can. Without paywalls. Without expecting or asking for credit. In the hope it encourages more people to do stuff The Open Way. In ways I can't imagine from my privileged position. 1/3

Pick zero, one or more, depending on your capabilities and possibilities.

Stay calm and install solar panels.

Stay calm and install heat pumps.

Stay calm and build a Homelab to keep your data at home.

Stay calm and help your neighbours.

Stay calm and read the news but understand your anger on things you cannot change is wasted energy.

Stay calm and care about your direct environment where you can change things.

You are not alone. Many people around you are doing this already.

#StoicLife

Pinned post that has links to Evergreen toots/threads as replies. A kind of "best of" collection for you to enjoy and get to know my virtual persona better.

YES, you can develop, support open source/Free Software (FOSS) projects as an unpaid hobby, just for fun.

YES, you can develop and support
#FOSS projects as (big or small) part of your paid job or as freelancer.

YES, you can develop and support FOSS projects by asking for donations.

And yes, all of these approaches can exist at the same time. YOU decide. FOSS is about freedom, not about money or not.

And NO, you owe no-one an explanation or justification on why you do
#FOSS the way you do.

Had to verify. And yes. Kernighan and Ritchie really did this. TIL :)

A while ago I posted about the legendary #Duralex glasses from France, and how the workers, facing possible bankruptcy, decided to turn it into a cooperative rather than accept being sold to investors that wanted to fire a third of the people. Well. They grew their revenue by 22% and plan to break even in 2027. They crowdfunded emergency funding, planned to be €5M which they had to stop when €20M was pledged within 48 hours. YES!

The #Fediverse can focus on praising what is good while also criticising what is bad. That's what makes us special, in my opinion. Other "social" networks use algorithms to hide the praise because only negativity brings traffic and ad click money. We are different. We can promote the good without risking being shadow-banned. Use that power. At least once a day. Deal? It takes some time to leave that pavlovian reflex of negativity behind. But at least try and you will enjoy the results :)

TIL (Today I Learned): Blockchain bro's know that they have a bad reputation nowadays, so they now say "append-only solution" instead of blockchain. And just to be sure, remember this: No, you don't need a blockchain. :)

OK. Now that I understood how to create S/MIME certificates with my own Certificate Authority (CA) I can go to the next level. Federated CAs. Decentralised trust relationships between CAs. It's a new feature in step-ca. https://smallstep.com/blog/step-v0.8.3-federation-root-rotation/

We have lost so many things. Please don’t let us lose film production. Classic negatives on film is how we save our history. The Kodak announcement that they might have to wind down makes me sad. And no, I don’t know how we can save them or their film production. But I hope we do find a way.
