Began as a peasant's house in the 1300s: Historians have generally had low opinions of peasant houses describing them as "hardly more than crude huts" and "primitive...for the most part (houses) were small, with one or two rooms for people and animals alike."

A Lone Ranger Atomic "Bomb" Ring, a promotional toy offered by Kix cereal in 1947....
In the nuclear-obsessed 1940s, when atomic energy symbolized progress and modernity, one cereal company decided to ride the waveβ€”though not in the safest way. In 1947, Kix cereal launched a daring promotion: for just 15 cents and a cereal box top, children could receive the

The ring wasn’t just a toy. It contained a tiny sample of polonium-210, a radioactive isotope (substance), within a spinthariscope, allowing users to observe flashes of light caused by alpha particles. The ring featured a β€œmagic viewing chamber” with a zinc sulfide screen that glowed when struck by alpha particles emitted by the polonium. As long as it wasn’t inhaled or ingested, it was considered β€œsafe” but polonium-210 is one of the most toxic substances known to science.

Japan just made a new metal from waste wood β€” and it’s stronger than titanium.
At the University of Tokyo, scientists have created a groundbreaking new material: a metal-like composite made entirely from discarded wood fibers. Lighter than aluminum and stronger than titanium, it could replace metals in everything from cars to satellites β€” all while being biodegradable.

This is the corner of a hand-sewn #sail made in the #1800s. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are truly remarkableβ€”a skill that has largely become a lost art.
Canvas sails like this were made from hemp, which was also used in clothing, ropes, and even the caulking that sealed gaps between ship planks. Hemp was favored over materials like jute because it was three times stronger and resistant to saltwater..

These antique binder book designs in the Global Museum Store will make a difference!

Reviews:
⭐⭐ I love this 2-ring binder. I bought one for my sister as well and we are both very happy with them - Kelly M.

⭐⭐ One of the smoothest internet experiences I’ve had. The printing and binder came out just as ordered and was above what was expected - Navy V.

When sperm whales need a nap, they take a deep breath, dive down about 45 feet and arrange themselves into perfectly-level, vertical patterns. They sleep sound and still for up to two hours at a time between breaths, in pods of 5 or 6 whales, presumably for protection. No one knew whales slept vertically until a 2008 study documented the behavior. And no one captured really good photography of it in the wild until 2017.

This photo was taken by a Turkish photographer when a goat gave birth to a baby on an icy mountain. To save the life of the goat and the baby, a village girl (shepherd) carried the mother on her shoulder and the girl's dog saved the newborn goat by carrying her too. This photo is a living example of humanity.
