For work I machine parts for submarines and other underwater equipment. Expect to see posts about machining, software, and photos of landscapes.

My current focus is on #machining, mainly making parts for things that go underwater, including submarines. Other interests are #woodworking and software.

I started out writing software for fun, then did it for profit for a long time and now do it for fun again, mostly using#emacs to write
#python.

Does anyone have know the proper way to dispose of wood pallets in #Amsterdam ? I’m expecting to have two delivered with belongings from our old home this month.

I looked at the Amsterdam waste site and the bulk collection portion does not list them as something as they collect. They are also not included in the list of things they don’t collect.

Where do you buy coffee beans in #Amsterdam? Is there something you like about the place you can share?

(Trying a much less specific question as the last version got lots of boosts but no answers)

Let’s try and figure out this whole 3d printing thing.

Something to hold coffee filters. I used metal hardware because it is what I know how to do but I think others would have also 3d printed the posts and perhaps press fit them or something.

I kept going back and forth will a million ideas and finally told myself to just print something and learn from it. One thing I learned is that if I run out of green filament in the middle of a print, recovery is no big deal. Just load more filament, tell it to go, and it will resume with that other color.

My new-to-me bike after I have added the reelights, added bags, and changed the lock to also lock the cable. I kind of wish it was a chain instead but also this will work.

It looks more burgundy to my eyes than it seems in this photo.

I am thrilled to have my own bike here and also I have developed an appreciation for the rental bikes I have ridden here.

I’d say that the reelights, with their flickering, will probably do a good job of making sure I am seen at night but probably won’t do a very good job of helping me to see. So far I’ve only used them in the day though.

Some pics from our first trip to Utrecht. It felt like a chill, lovely smaller city

Anyone have tips about adding dynamo-powered lights to an older bike? Is there a shop you recommend where I can take it to have this done for me?

I finally bought a used bike and now I realize I don't like the lighting. It came with battery-powered front and rear lights. Something I loved about the swapfiets I have been riding is that I never have to think about the lighting. If I pedal, it is working. And even after I pedal and stop, it works for a while.

How hard is this to add to my bike? searching around, it sounds like maybe I need a whole new wheel with a dynamo hub? That sounds extreme.

The end of the Albert Cuyp Market for the night in #Amsterdam. Amsterdam is such a very nice looking city, but especially so at night I think.

Possibly my most dutchie moment so far: riding a bicycle with flowers in the basket, next to a canal with ice in it. Quite blissful actually!

I’m thinking about attending FOSDEM in Brussels at the end of this month. Anyone else going? Any tips?

The last time I was in Brussels was a long time ago

I'm not sure where this thought is going yet, but as a new resident of Amsterdam, there are so many things I want to visit. Every day, I learn about something and think "I want to remember to visit that new thing”.

I can easily imagine this extending to β€œI visited this thing and want to again”, or perhaps even β€œthis would be good to visit with this kind of person”.

And you know, tying all this into a map is obviously important. And I'd really rather not give this information to some company that may decide to charge me to get at it later.

I'm pretty clueless about mapping in general, but perhaps something with openstreetmap and geodjango. Or perhaps something more purely javascript/typscript based. Still thinking about it.
