Trying to pretend today is just another day.

It is, mostly.

It reinforces my belief that the idea that LLMs are a step towards AGI is nonsense.

The ability to recognize what is relevant is a precondition of agency.

Agency precedes consciousness.

Consciousness precedes language.

Consciousness does not emerge from language. You cannot have consciousness without agency.

A paramecium has agency and awareness that an entire data center cannot achieve with all its catastrophic waste of resources.

I was looking at this philosophy paper again.

I've been hesitant about running TTRPGs with a lot of combat mechanics. I'm not good at tactical thinking, so how would I manage arranging conflicts so it looks like the PCs are outmatched but can still win?

But then I remember that thanks to my own incompetence, I can be sure to lose even with a material advantage.

Maybe a dumb question: so Robin Hood and friends were robbing tax collectors to give money back to the poor, but how did that work?

As I understand it, in pre-modern economies, particularly in medieval Europe, currency wasn't used much. And in general the idea with currency was that taxes had to be paid with coins to force peasants to sell food to armies who paid with coins.

So that would suggest that robbing tax collectors was more about disrupting power relations than easing poverty, per se.

Is there a term for something like the opposite of a flow state?

Like, I'm trying to settle down to focus on developing an idea, and all my creativity evaporates, and eventually I'll feel like I just need to power through it, and I end up producing something dull and lifeless?
