30-something who's grew up online and has seen it all. sometimes an optimist, sometimes nostalgic.

I wrote the ActivityPub initial draft, so this social network is in some way my fault. These days I spend a lot of time studying social dynamics and thinking about how we build social systems which foster a healthier culture.

Coffee is such a fickle mistress, some days I make a carafe and I have a delicious beverage full of all those fruity flavour notes the packaging told me about, while other days, with the same coffee and water, I make a carafe and I end up with a cup of hot brown full of bitterness and not much else and wonder whether I should just develop a crippling monster addiction instead

The small pleasures in life like taking ones shoes off, seats with back support, and showers where you don't have to carefully dodge mud puddles on the way out

If you're running an event like this, I beg of you, please assemble a team who's job it is to verify that things are mounted at height correctly and that has veto power. It is absolutely necessary.

The lighting here was all rigged by so called professionals! The fact you're paying someone to do it clearly doesn't mean they are doing a safe job

This is a 2kg outdoor access point mounted above a position where people regularly stand with zip ties and again no safety. Can you imagine what happens if a 2kg object falls on someone's head?

@why2025noc@hsnl.social perhaps you should invest in safety cables for all of your APs. CCHH mandates you use them for Congress anyway, but you should be using them every time

Perhaps my favourite was this AP mounted with load baring electrical tape over the queue for one of the bar POS terminals.

I repeat that: Load bearing
electrical tape #why2025

I had to do this two years ago at CCCamp23, I can’t believe I’m having to do this again, and I’m even more incredulous that I’m having to do this about something done by an ostensibly professional events company, but we reported a safety issue up to Projectleiding over 24 hours ago and they have decided it is not an important problem, so:

@why2025camp@chaos.social #why2025 can you tell me the WLL (Working Load Limit) of an ordinary cable tie, as a member of NUTS/Captain Power is using to rig a light ~3m above head height in the first photograph here, and as you can see used to secure the light in the second?

(First photo mine, second photo

Similarly @why2025camp@chaos.social #why2025, can you tell me why this light was allowed to be rigged without a safety cable?
